Mets lineups and their games with the Braves

Since I have not talked about the Mets for a few days I might as well talk about how they did last few games. I’m not going back to the day with the San Francisco Giants, I’m going to talk about the first two games while hosting the Braves.
ATLNYM

I’ll give short summaries for the first two.

Game one
Braves 4, Mets,9.

Oliver Perez beats Derek Lowe.

Matt Diaz hits a three run home run in the second inning, Adam LaRoche hits a solo blast in the third inning. The Mets would respond in the fourth inning by scoring 8 runs, 10 hits and effectively knocking off Derek Lowe out of the game. Gary Sheffield had two doubles in that inning also.

Game two
Braves 15, Mets 2

Biggest part of the game was the 8 run second inning, with Brian McCann’s three run home run. Adam LaRoche and Matt Diaz also homered later in the game. Jair Jurrjens beats Bobby Parnell in the pitching matchup.

What are the Mets to do now?
Here was their Opening day lineup

Jose Reyes      SS
Daniel Murphy   LF
David Wright     3b
Carlos Delgado 1b
Carlos Beltran   CF
Ryan Church     RF
Brian Schnieder   C
Luis Castillo       2b
Johan Santana   p

Here was their lineup in their last game, at the time of this posting

Angel Pagan               CF
Luis Castillo                2b
Gary Sheffield              LF
Daniel Murphy             1b
Jeff Francoeur             RF
Fernando Tatis            3b
Omir Santos               C
Anderson Hernandez   SS
Bobby Parnell               P

I’ll note some differences here.
1. Jose Reyes, David Wright, Carlos Delgado, and Carlos Beltran are not playing because they are injured.

2. Johan Santana and Brian Schnieder were not scheduled to play.

3. Because Carlos Delgado is out, Daniel Murphy and Fernando Tatis have to plantoon at 1st base, when they are usually outfielders.

4. Anderson Hernandez was with the Nationals on opening day, Jeff Francoeur was with the Braves as well. Both ended up with the Mets with Hernandez coming out of waivers from the Nationals, while Francoeur was acquired by trade with Ryan Church. Gary Sheffield started the season as a Free Agent.

5. Angel Pagan and Omir Santos weren’t with the Mets on opening day, they were called upon subsequently to replace the injured players, Carlos Beltran, and when Brian Schnieder were on the DL.

6. Luis Castillo is the only player playing the same position in both lineups.

I am refusing to give up on the Mets until the season is finally over. After that we’ll see whtch team I’ll be rooting for depending on who goes there.

In other news:
NYYOAK

The Yankees beat the Athletics 3 to 2, benefiting from Mark Teixiera’s two run home run. Mariano Rivera collects his 36th save. Chad Gaudin didn’t qualify for the win because he only pitched 4 and one thirds innings. I think Joe Giradi should have left him out there to qualify for the win.

ARIPHI

Phillies beat the Diamondbacks 8 to 1. Cliff Lee pitches a complete game and Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and Jayson Werth each homered. Good offense and great pitching sure wins games in this case.

Later tonight is the start of the NPF (softball) championships. Four teams vie for the Championship title in Akron Ohio.

The teams competing are
1. Chicago Bandits
2. Akron Racers (host team for the event)
3. Rockford Thunder (Illionis)
4. USSSA (Florida) Pride

Seeds 1 and 4 play in a best of three series while 2 and 3 play in another best of three series. The winners of each series face each other in the final round. I believe it’s a best of three series with the winner taking the title. The Bandits are the defending champions and are looking to repeat while the Racers, Thunder, and Pride look to dethrone them.

Go to profastpitch.com for live games and schedule of the events. Unfortunately there’s no TV schedule for this tourney.

Thanks for reading today.

Baseball in the head

Two
players were hit in the head yesterday by a baseball. Mets’ third baseman David
Wright took a 94 mph pitch off Matt Cain in the left ear and Dodgers Huroki
Kuroda took a line drive off the left side of his head off Diamondbacks hitter Rusty
Ryal.

By the way
the scores are here:

Giants 5,
Mets 4

Dodgers 3,
Diamondbacks 4

Let’s begin with Matt Cain’s bean ball to David Wright.

DWright1.jpg

The ball is on it’s way.

DWright2.jpg

This is David Wright laying down, and Matt Cain looking up.

DWright3.jpg

David Wright wouldn’t be getting up for around five minutes. Everyone was in shock that day. Matt Cain would later ask Mets’ catcher Brian Schnieder if he was doing fine. Brian couldn’t answer him. Although Matt’s pitch there was inintentional, Johan Santana opposing him would later pitch behind Pablo Sandoval (warinings were issued) and later Bengie Molina. Johan was not ejected from the game. Those two Giants later did homer in the game.

Back to this beanball…

This ball is being thrown

And hits David Wright hard in the replays from FOX Saturday Baseball.

DWright5.jpgFOX Saturday Baseball’s image at the moment David was hit. Yikes. He would later be rushed to the hospital where he would stay there overnight.

Let’s head west to the other player Huroki Kuroda.

Rusty Ryal hits a line drive off Huroki Kuroda’s head.

Kuroda1.jpgThe ball is hit headed into Huroki Kuroda’s head.

Kuroda2.jpg

Kuroda3.jpg
Kuroda4.jpgHuroki is hit and falls down on the mound. He would be taken off via a cart after the Dodgers players and coaches attend to him. These screenshots are from FSN Arizona.

In comparison, David Wright walked to the dugout on his own power while Huroki Kuroda was carried off. Seeing those two get hit by the ball was scary. I think Huroki had it worse though because he was hit and his baseball cap was his only protector, while David Wright had a batting helmet.

I never thought we’d see these scary moments happen on the same day, let’s hope that these two players recover soon. Actually, these two players have been taken out of hospital care and will be out for a while, I’m not sure if they’re going on the disabled list or not. We’ll have to see about that.

Edit. I forgot to note, there was a third player hit in the head last night:
Ian Kinsler of the Texas Rangers was also hit in the head by a Fernando Cabrera pitch.
Unlike David Wright and Huroki Kuroda, Ian stayed in the game like it was just an ordinary bean ball. He did have some words for Fernando Cabrera though. Good thing he didn’t have to go to the hospital. Three players, risking their heads. Yikes! This was taken from FSN South The Rangers beat the Red Sox 7 to 2.

How many different caps do each MLB team wear?

I have a list of Major
League baseball squads and the amount of baseball caps that are worn today.
This list is for the 2009 MLB season. List is not in alphabetical order. This
list may not be accurate but this is best to my knowledge.

The teams that only have one
baseball cap style

1. Yankees

2. White Sox

3. Rays

4. Cubs

5. Mariners

6. Marlins

7. Giants

8. Dodgers

9. Angels

10. Royals

Teams with two baseball cap
schemes

1. Astros

2. Phillies

3. Pirates

4. Rockies

5. Reds

6. Tigers

7. Diamondbacks

8. Tigers

9. Red Sox

10. Brewers

11. Orioles

Teams with three or more
baseball cap styles

1. Mets

2. Athletics (4)

3. Indians (4)

4. Rangers

5. Twins

6. Braves

7. Nationals

8. Cardinals

9. Blue Jays

To
see the caps go to
mlb.com/shop. I do believe there are about 61 baseball caps total that
are used by all 30 MLB teams combined. By average, there’s around two
different caps worn by each team, however 10 MLB teams only have one
cap style used on field.

Here’s the same list, but
this is from the 2005 season

Teams with only one
baseball cap style

1. Yankees

2. Red Sox

3. White Sox

4. Mariners

5. Angels

6. Giants

7. Marlins

Teams with two baseball cap
schemes

1. Cubs

2. Pirates

3. Diamondbacks

4. Tigers

5. Blue Jays

6. Brewers

7. Braves

8. Phillies

9. Astros

10. Padres

11. Dodgers

Teams wit three baseball
cap schemes

1. Mets

2. Rockies

3. Reds

4. Athletics

5. Indians

6. Nationals

7. Twins

8. Cardinals

9. Rangers

10. Devil Rays

11. Royals

12. Orioles

So what’s different between
2005 and 2009?

1. Dodgers ditched the
silver bill on their alternate cap after 2006.

2. Devil Rays become Rays
after 2007 and adapts to only one cap scheme.

3 Cubs, Orioles ditched
their road caps, Cubs with the blue crown and the red bill and the Orioles with
the all black scheme. The home caps Cubs all blue with red button and Orioles
with orange button, black crown and orange bill are used.

4. Braves have a new road
cap.

5. Athletics and Indians
are the only teams with four different cap schemes

6. Rockies and Reds have not worn their third alternate caps frequently, Rockies with the all purple scheme cap and the Reds with the black cap with
the Red bill.

7. Red Sox have adapted two
red socks logo used for road games.

Do you remember when Tampa Bay’s team were called the Devil Rays?

I’m just glad the Diamondbacks decided to change their colors.

Today,
the caps are made out of polyester, and not wool. The under visor on
all of the caps as well as the head band are black. Before this change
the caps had a light gray under visor and a white head band.

The
following photo was taken by Andrew Scott of USA Today. The polyester
cap, used now is on the left, while the wool cap is on the right. These
are the home caps of the Oakland Athletics.

I believe the suggested retail price for today’s caps (polyester ones) are about $30 from $25 for the wool ones.

Today’s caps are supposed to do this:
1. Reduce glare in bright areas and in the sun.
2. Be shrink resistant, (this was a problem with the wool caps)
3. The fabric is supposed to absorb moisture, leaving the head cool and ry.
4. The polyester caps dry better than the wool ones.

I have plenty of these laying around my bedroom. I do plan on collecting some more because they are more comfortable to wear.

I bet most of you do own at least a few here.

Update:
I have the following team’s caps.

I have three or more of each team.
New York Mets (all three hat colors that are worn on field)
New York Yankees  (two of the three caps have patches on the left side)
Chicago White Sox (two out of three are customized, not worn on field)

I have two of each
Colorado Rockies (all purple, and black cap with purple bill)
Chicago Cubs
Pittsburgh Pirates (I have a black P with a red bill, but this style has been discontinued).
Cleveland Indians (both caps have Chief Wahoo on it)
Oakland Athletics (one is green with yellow A’s and the other is a  black cap, with green A’s.)

I have one of each
Los Angeles Dodgers
Florida Marlins
Cincinnati Reds (red cap, black bill used on the road)
St Louis Cardinals (red home cap)
Milwaukee Brewers (blue cap with a MB logo that looks like a glove)
Atlanta Braves (navy blue crown, red bill)
Houston Astros (black cap)

I believe I blogged about my baseball cap collection a month ago so I’ll send you here

Mets salvage a win in the Desert…

Is it easy to give up on the New York Mets? No. To me, I’m not giving up. The Mets can’t get any worse than they are right now. I think they still have a legit shot at winning the Division, forget their injuries, I think they are capable of having a fun September, unlike the last two years. I think there’s still some “pride” left for the Mets to pull this one out, despite a 53-61 record and being in 4th place.

So without any further ado, I’ll recap the game.

NYMARI
Mets won 6-4

The game started at 3:30pm Eastern time (1:30pm Arizona time)

Oliver Perez pitched good enough to keep the Mets in the game. I felt like he deserved to win the game. Jon Garland on the other hand was pitching well too, he beat the Mets around two weeks ago at Citi Field. Garland was in line to defeat the Mets, but the Mets made a huge rally in the 6th inning.

Here’s the highlights

Bottom 3rd
Augie Ojeda scores on a double by Ryan Roberts.

Top 6th
Jon Garland makes a wild pitch and David Wright scores. David reached base on a dropped third strike.
Fernando Tatis singles and Gary Sheffield and Jeff Francoeur both score.

Bottom 7th
Josh Whitesell singles and Gerardo Parra scores. Steven Drew scores too on a Miguel Montero single.

Top 8th
Luis Castillo singles and Fernando Tatis scores. Castillo was lucky not to have struck out in that at bat.
Cory Sullivan triples to score Luis Castillo.
Jon Rauch who thought he struck out Castillo says to the home plate umpire “That ball was a strike, those are your two runs, mister.”  He is later tossed. AJ Hinch, the DBacks manager was also ejected.

Top 9th
David Wright scores while Fernando Tatis strikes out.

Bottom 9th
Gerardo Parra scores on a Josh Whitesell single.

The game ends.

I find the Jon Rauch ejection a bit funny. At least the Mets go home 2-5, and not 1-6.

The Yankees beat up on the Blue Jays.

Although AJ Burnett didn’t win the game, the Yankees did, and AJ does his “in your pie” ritual to Robinson Cano. Why, Robinson hits a walk off hit. Nice way to end the game in extra innings, a single to bring home Alex Rodriguez. Although the Blue Jays outhit the Yankees 14-7, it’s the runs that count.

Johnny Damon and Robinson Cano homered for the Yankees. Yankee fans have been getting a lot of this lately, I hope this isn’t the last time AJ gets to throw a pie at someone. I wonder what flavor that is?

Anyways that’s it for today, I know this is my second post of the day, but I just had to do it because these were wonderful day games to see. I hope you had a fun day!

Mets fans are better left sleeping, but then again…

The way the Mets have been playing, they have lost five of their last six games in this road trip, three in San Diego and two, including last night in Arizona and all those losses came during the night, their only win so far was in the daytime Sunday game. Since it’s just 7pm in San Diego, Mets fans had to watch their games as late as 10pm Eastern time. Their performances in those two cities were not that good either. Maybe some hitting here and there, pitching, however is a bit underachieving.

Has it been worth it to stay up all night in the East Coast to watch the Mets play like this? Nah, not really, especially when Everith Cabrera hits a walk off Grand Slam off Francisco Rodriguez past midnight, or the time the Mets had little or no offense in the night games played there. I bet some fans were falling asleep right before those games ended. I tried to stay awake, but there’s not a lot going on the Mets way. I think the best thing Mets fans can do is stay positive. This team is not out of it just yet, there’s a month and a half of the season left so anything can happen.

Chase Field in Phoenix is usually where the Mets dominate. Forget the 100+ temperatures, the roof is closed to keep the field cool, and that’s usually good for the Mets. Not these two nights, they lost the first two games of the series.

Livan Hernandez just lasts only four innings, giving up five runs. The Mets are considering replacing Livan (7-7) with pitchers like Tim Redding and Nelson Figueroa

“The last two games I’ve just tried to be perfect,” Hernandez said.
“That’s the problem. I’m behind the hitters all the time because I want
to be perfect. I’ve got to work it out. I’ve got to say I’m sorry to
everyone today and go and say I’m sorry to Jerry because I didn’t pitch
good today.

The Diamondbacks hit very well in the game.

Bottom 1st

Gerrardo Parra reaches on error, and Stephen Drew scores.

Top 2nd

Jeff Fracoeur hits a solo home run

Bottom 3rd

Miguel Montero singles and Trent Oeltjen scores.Alex Romero singles to bring home both Gerardo Parra and Miguel Montero.

Top 4th

Alex Cora hits a single; brings home Fernando Tatis

Bottom 4th

Gerardo Parra singles to bring home Trent Oeltjen who tripled to get on base.

Bottom 7th

Ryan Roberts doubles to bring home Miguel Montero

That’s all

Livan Hernandez loses (7-7) while Max Scherzer wins (7-6)

The Diamondbacks are hitting at all cylinders. Mets will have to salvage one game of this three game set while the DBacks will go for the sweep.

Oh here’s another one.

Yankees beat the Blue Jays 7-5, behind back to back home run efforts by Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada. Randy Ruiz and Edwin Encarnacion also homered for the Blue Jays, but that didn’t help the Jays as much.

Posada’s home run was under review but was later upheld, as it barely cleared the foul pole in right field. Joba Chamberlain started but did not get a decision, he pitched six innings giving up four runs. He would have been in hook of a loss of 4-3, however, the Yankees scores 8 runs in the bottom of the 8th to take Joba off the losing hook.

Scott Richmond would’ve won, but his bullpen faultered and he gets a no decision also.

David Robertson wins in relief, Mariano Rivera saves the game, and Jesse Carlson is charged with a blown save and the loss.

The Yankees fly to Seattle after today’s game in Toronto, let’s hope the Yankees can fare better in the West, because that’s not been a friendly place to East Coast teams such as the Mets and Rays.

Mets fly home to New York to take on the visiting San Franciso Giants. It should be a fun series.

DBacks at Mets City, White Sox party at home against Yankees, and more from Ogdensburg trip.

Here’s the first two scores of the first two games the Diamondbacks played at Citi Field against the Mets.
ARINYM

Diamondbacks 3, Mets 2 (Friday)
Diamondbacks 6, Mets 9 (Saturday)

Here’s my series summary:

The
Arizona Diamondbacks packed some power against the Mets in the first two games.
Justin Upton and Mark Reynolds were impressive with their long shots in the two
games. The best play though came in the second game of the series, when Angel
Pagan hit a grand slam (home run with a base runner on each of the three bases)
to give the Mets a 9-5 lead in game two of the series.

Francisco
Rodriguez records his first save since the All-Star Game, a 20 day span, in game 2 of the series. He
came in because Brian Stokes gave up a towering home run to Mark Reynolds. It’s alright though, at least the Mets can give that up and still win the game. Oliver Perez pitched five okay innings, but did not get the decision as Bobby Parnell blows the save, giving up two runs.

The third game is in a rain delay as I speak.

My favorite matchup of the American League, I like to call this “The Battle of the Pinstripes” The Yankees and the White Sox both wear pinstripes at home, so I decided to give that label.

NYYCWS

Yankees 2, White Sox 3 (Thursday)
Yankees 5, White Sox 10(Friday)
Yankees 4, White Sox 14(Saturday)

The way things are going in this series, the White Sox are on track to sweep the Yankees. The hitting, pitching, and defense were clicking for the White Sox. Maybe Jake Peavy was their good luck charm for the White Sox. To be quite honest, I thought the Yankees would win at least one game up to this point. If the White Sox do end up sweeping the Yankees, then the Bronx Bombers will end up limping in Toronto, Ontario when they face Roy Halladay (thank goodness the trade rumors are over) Jerry Hairston Jr, is a bright spot for the Yankees collecting a base hit in his first game in a Yankees uniform.

I like the Yankees offense to keep hitting, but they need at least 6 runs to win a game, because the White Sox have a whole lot of offense from hitters like Paul Konerko, Jermaine Dye, Jim Thome, and AJ Pierzynski. The Yankees Johnny Damon, Mark Teixiera, Derek Jeter, and Alex Rodriguez need to set the tone in this game.

Thumbnail image for PICT0019.JPG

I’ve seen these hats around (this is my cap by the way), on TV and in New York, yep, White Sox fans are everywhere.

Thumbnail image for PICT0015.JPG

I saw plenty of Yankees fan rooting for their team, with this cap also. Hopefully the Yankees can salvage a win today.Yankees fans are everywhere, even in Chicago too.

Here’s more from the Ogdensburg Trip.

A1 Buffet is a Chinese Buffet in Scranton, Pennsylvania. I did display some of the images during, now here’s the rest.

And here is what we ate when we were up in my Aunt Mae’s house in Ogdensburg for the four days.

I
was pretty stuffed after eating all those. I really don’t want to know
how many calories I just took up just by eating, (a calorie is a unit
of energy, the energy content in food). I’m no foodie, but when there’s
something good to eat, you can hardly resist.

Me and my little brother, Mark awaiting a meal, how interesting.

Here are other images from our stay, that does not include what I ate.
The
only issue we had, as I said in the last post, mosquitoes. They were
such big pests as they stung us each at least 10 times. Good thing for
medicine, otherwise these insect bites would be stinging for days now.

It is sure nice and green here. I hope it stays that way.

And
here’s a photo of my older sister Meg, she deserves all the credit
here. She’s the one who took the food photos, so I give her a big
thanks for that.
There she is standing in front of the house.. Thanks for reading.
